Early versions of the TL-WR702N 150Mbps Wireless N Nano Router originally used a portion of the device’s MAC address as the default network password. There is a concern that using part of the product’s MAC address as the part of the default password may make the full password easier to guess.

As a matter of course, we always recommend that end-users create a unique SSID and password when using any TP-Link product. This recommendation is outlined in all product manuals and is incorporated into the quick setup process. If you are already using the TL-WR702N, or any other TP-Link product, please take a minute to make sure that you are using a secure, complex password of your own choosing. Detailed instructions for changing your password can be found here.

The MAC address password structure is currently only used for the TL-WR702N router and this practice will be amended in the next firmware version. After this transition, all TP-Link products will be shipped with default passwords that do not include any portion of the corresponding MAC address.
